Fāṭimah bint Ḥuzam Al-Kulābīyya, commonly known as Umm Al-Banin (“mother of several sons”) was the mother of ‘Abbas ibn ‘Ali (commonly known as Abu Al-Fadhl Al-‘Abbas, or Abu Fadhel), the heroic commander of Hussein ibn ‘Ali’s (ra) forces at the Battle of Karbala. She married ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (ra) after the death of his first wife Fatimah (ra).
All her sons were killed at the battle of Karbala’, including ‘Ali’s (ra) son, the 11 years old ‘Uthman ibn ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, a figure that is rarely mentioned (if at all) by Shi’ite speakers in the month of Muharram (in which they don’t even fail to mention infants that were present at the battle of Karbala…).
Umm Al-Banin is excessively revered in Twelver Shi’ism, so is her son Abu Al-Fadhl, yet when was the last time you heard Shi’ites speaking about her other son ‘Uthman son of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib? When was the last time they invoked him, and waved flags with his name written on?
His only crime seems to be his beautiful name ‘Uthman, a name the Ahl Al-Bayt loved. Pay attention: We don’t make the claim they loved ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan or named their sons after ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan, we simply state the fact that the name was good enough for the Ahl Al-Bayt (who advised us to give our children only good names), so what was good for the Ahl Al-Bayt is also good for us, till the day of Judgement. It is ironic that the Sunnis (the alleged ‘opponents’ of the Ahl Al-Bayt do name their children after Ahl Al-Bayt (‘Ali, Fatimah etc.) and also chose names such as ‘Uthman, just like the Ahl Al-Bayt did. Their alleged ‘lovers and followers’ however seem to know better than the Ahl Al-Bayt and do not follow them in naming their own children after their children.
Note: Needless to say that just like the Ahl Al-Bayt, the slogan of the people of Tawhid, the Ahl Al-Sunnah is nothing but Ya Allah. Nobody else is invoked and nobody elses name is raised on the banners except the Shahadah, i.e. Allah and his Messenger (عليه الصلاة والسلام).
